No pro shoot inside the Forbidden CityCommercial photography without museum permission has been banned since 30 June 2023. You can walk inside in Ming dress with a normal ticket, but the photographer shoots outside: moat, corner tower 角楼, red walls.
Most Beijing studios are QingThe default product is the Qing "gege" princess look 格格. Real Ming stock is thinner. Ask for photos of 马面裙 · 比甲 · 披风 for her and 道袍 · 曳撒 · 飞鱼服 for him.
Ming-founded sitesAncestral Temple 太庙 · Zhihua Temple 智化寺 (1443) · Temple of Heaven · the Ming Tombs. Each has its own photography rules: the Ancestral Temple's published rules prohibit commercial costume shoots, so visit it as sightseers.
Light and leavesSunset about 17:15 on 30 Oct. Ginkgo usually peaks late Oct to early Nov; Ditan Park 地坛 has the best avenue. Late-October mornings can be cold, so check the forecast and bring layers to wear under the robes.

- A daughter's post, "Ming bearing, my dad is so handsome" (763 likes, Feb 2026), shows her father in Ming dress at the Ancestral Temple and Beihai Park. Passers-by mistook him for an actor. She paid ¥368. He had agreed thinking it was a studio shoot, and ended up enjoying the attention.
- Caution
- Search results also show complaint posts about a Luoyang shop using the same name, so make sure you contact the Beijing account (ID below).

- It has a real website listing its Ming garments and couple portfolio. Its own posts advertise "unhappy with the makeup, we pay you back" and claim CCTV coverage (self-claims, not verified). Branches in Beijing, Luoyang and Xi'an.

- A Mar 2026 style guide says queues can be long and suggests booking 3 days ahead. English unverified.

- Options
- "Nancy's team" on Klook (122954) has the strongest reviews for an interpreter relaying the photographer's directions. China Explorer Tour's Beijing page lists about US$120 per person plus US$45 per booking for an English companion (around US$285 for two; confirm).
- Trick
- Book the English team for the shoot, but ask for Ming outfits by name and for photos of the actual garments before paying.
For his outfit, 故人初 (Gurenchu, studio and photographer) has a well-liked post on men's Ming dress (571 likes) and Ming couple sets, and no complaint posts turned up in my search. See its men's Ming post. For the Pursuit of Jade swordsman energy, 简兮摄影工作室 calls itself "the Beijing studio best at wuxia". That claim is self-promotion and unverified. Amanduo 阿曼朵 (Wangfu Century 4F) gets praise in roundups for "light reconstruction" makeup, but its accounts post canned comments under other people's reviews, so weigh that praise accordingly.
Avoid
- Xifu Haitang / Starlight Rabbit 西扶海棠 · 星光兔: a national chain with a Beijing branch. A search finds warning posts under its name in at least eight other cities, including "at first I felt I'd been scammed" (1,301 likes) and a review-account post, "burned at a famous influencer shop" (4,479 likes). Lookalike names exist, and this doesn't prove the Beijing branch is bad, but its look is the glossy influencer style anyway.
- 一碗米饭妆造 · yxy旅拍 · 大鱼海棠妆造: separate reports. A roundup criticises 一碗米饭 for pilled clothes and refusing redos; one customer says yxy's Ming costume was filthy; another says 大鱼海棠 used her own photos in its advertising without permission.
- Shops at the Forbidden City gates and roadside ¥99 deals: one family reports 15-minute makeup at ¥298 per adult plus ¥400 for the photographer. Another customer's ¥548 package overran by 3 hours, so she missed her palace entry time.
- Freelance street photographers, with disappointing results reported at the corner tower (¥50 for 10 photos), at the Temple of Heaven, and the "photographers' association" uncle at the Summer Palace (¥600 an hour, backlit and unusable).
